Our iconic silos were built in 1920 by the Huron Portland Cement Company. At that time, all across the country, lumber was making way for concrete as the construction tool of choice. These silos were used for the storage of powdered cement, a key ingredient for making concrete.
These silos formed a crucial link in the supply chain for the Huron Portland Cement Company and their headquarters in Alpena, Michigan, on the shore of another of the Great Lakes — Lake Huron. By storing powdered cement in these silos, they were better equipped to meet the climbing demand for concrete in the Midwest as city skylines around the country began to be transformed by skyscrapers.
