Pier B History

The mining and timber industries were booming during the late 1800s in Duluth, and around 1883, construction of a train trestle connecting Rice Point to Canal Park formed what is now the developed waterfront. In 1890, Kelley Island Line and Transport Company of Ohio constructed Pier B to store limestone, an essential ingredient in cement, being shipped from their mine on Kelley’s Island on Lake Erie. By 1992, 10 piers were constructed along the harbor front, and they are now the location of the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center, Great Lakes Aquarium and Bayfront Festival Park.

The silos that you see on the property were used to suck the powdered cement from the ships into the four, 45-foot diameter silos. From there, the cement was bagged in a facility attached to the east side of the silos. In the 1970s, that bagging company was moved off-site and the facility was used to load trains and trucks for bulk distribution.

The silos were used in that capacity until 2008, when operations were consolidated with a Superior, Wisconsin, facility and moved there. Developers Alessandro Giuliani and Sanford Hoff acquired the site and assembled a group of investors dedicated to saving the historic silos.

CANAL PARK
Home to the Aerial Lift Bridge, the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center and dozens of quaint shops, restaurants and art galleries, Canal Park is one of the most popular tourist spots in Duluth. And it’s a short walk from Pier B Resort! Watch ships pass through the canal or enjoy a walk or bike ride along the Lakewalk.

THE DULUTH LAKEWALK
More than 7.5 miles in length, the Duluth Lakewalk’s western-most part begins at Pier B and runs all the way to Brighton Beach. This scenic Lakewalk is great for walkers and runners, rollerbladers and bikers. Restaurants, sculptures, views and more saturate the Lakewalk, making it a major attraction in Duluth.

PARK POINT RECREATION AREA
A popular destination for swimming and recreation, the Park Point recreation area is located at the end of Minnesota Avenue across the Aerial Lift Bridge. It hosts a large playing field, sand volleyball courts, a playground, and multiple pavilions and grills. Enjoy a long, relaxing walk along the 7-mile beach. Lifeguards are on the beach during the summer season.

BRIGHTON BEACH
Enjoy a picnic and grilling along the beautiful shores of Lake Superior. Brighton Beach, located in eastern Duluth, features trails that follow the shoreline. It’s a great place to stop before heading up the North Shore.

SCENIC HIGHWAY 61
If you have some time and want to see beautiful Lake Superior, drive the Scenic Highway 61. Scenic 61 follows the shore of Lake Superior, running from Duluth all the way to the Canadian border. Two Harbors and Grand Marais are popular destinations to visit on Highway 61. The route is packed with shops, restaurants and outdoor activities – and of course, unprecedented views of Lake Superior.

SPLIT ROCK LIGHTHOUSE
Shipwrecks from a mighty November gale in 1905 prompted the construction of this rugged landmark. Completed in 1910 by the U.S. Lighthouse Service, Split Rock Light Station soon became one of Minnesota’s best know landmarks.

ENGER TOWER
For some of the most picturesque, panoramic views of Duluth, climb the five stories to the top of Enger Tower. Built in 1939 from bluestone taken from this region, Enger Tower was dedicated to Bert Enger, a Norwegian who came to this country and became a successful furniture dealer. When he died, he donated two-thirds of his estate to the City of Duluth, which now includes the tower, a beautifully manicured park and a golf course.

S.S. METEOR MARITIME MUSEUM
This uniquely shaped ship carried a variety of cargo on the Great Lake until the 1970s. The tour takes you through the pilot house, crews’ quarters, and engine room, housing the original and impressive turn-of-the-century steam engine.

BAYFRONT FESTIVAL PARK
Few things are more fun than a summer concert on the bright, beautiful shore of Lake Superior. Bayfront is home to numerous concerts in the summer, surrounded by spectacular landscapes, and home to Bentleyville Tour of Lights from late November to the end of December. It is located just across the marina from Pier B.

GLENSHEEN MANSION
Glensheen Mansion, the most visited historic home in Minnesota, boasts 12 acres of gardens, bridges and the 39-room mansion on the shore of Lake Superior. Famous for its craftsmanship and controversial history, Chester and Clara Congdon built Glensheen from 1905-08 as their home. It was donated to the University of Minnesota in 1979, and features all the original furniture, art, décor and other elements in the home – even the bed sheets!

The Duluth Depot is home to eight different organizations. Fire and Safety

FIRE EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
First, find the two exits nearest your room. Be sure they are unlocked and unblocked. Then, count doors between your room and exits so you’ll have a reference point if it’s smoky.
When you hear an alarm, act, don’t investigate
If a fire is in your room, get out and close the door. Once out, report the fire.
If the fire is not in your room, leave if you can. First, feel your door. If it’s cool, open it slowly and go to the nearest exit. Crawl if smoke is present. Fresh air will be at the floor. Take your key so you can go back in if you can’t use the exits
If your room door is hot, don’t open it. Your room may be the safest place to be. Seal all cracks with wet towels. Shut off fans and air conditioners. Signal at your window. Call the fire department and wait to be rescued.
We hope that these procedures will contribute to your comfort and well-being during your stay at our hotel.

Do not leave money or valuables in your room or vehicle. Lock your vehicle when not in use. Pier B is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
SAFETY AND SECURITY PROCEDURES
Your safety and the security of your personal property are of our utmost concern. We urge you to take advantage of the following suggestions.

DOUBLE LOCKS
For additional security, utilize the deadbolt provided on your door upon entering. This will prevent the door from being opened by a regular room key.

ADMITTANCE
Do not admit persons to your room without first making identification. A “peep hole” is provided in your door for your convenience. If there is any doubt about a person’s true identity, please contact the front desk.

KEYS
Do safeguard your key. Be sure to leave it with the front desk upon departure. Do not leave it in your room or in the door. Do not give your key to others.

FIRE
Please familiarize yourself with the location of the nearest fire exit stairway. In the unlikely event of a fire, please move quickly but calmly to the stairs. Report fire or smoke to the hotel operator.
